What is Paediatric Sleep and Respiratory Medicine?

Paediatric sleep medicine is specialist care for newborns, infants, children and adolescents with many different types of sleep related problems. These sleep problems may involve the respiratory system (upper airways) and/or the control of sleep and breathing in the brain. At other times they are more about the behaviour that develops in relation to sleep, or the impact of other medical conditions or stressors.

Paediatric sleep medicine specialists are expert in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of conditions such as:

  • snoring
  • sleep apnoea
  • sleep disordered breathing
  • excessive daytime sleepiness
  • difficulty falling asleep
  • night waking
  • unsettled or poor sleep
  • parasomnias (night terrors, sleep walking)
  • restless leg syndrome
  • rhythmic movement disorders
